Another copy in the permanent collection at The Met, New York
As much as it looks like a photo book, it would be difficult to define 'The Map' ('Chizu' in Japanese) as just that. It is, in fact, a complex work, a kind of photographic exhibition packed into a single object characterised by powerful graphics, a revolutionary idea and an emotionally involving narrative process that made it appreciated by the great collector that is the photographer Martin Parr. Kikuji Kawada, founder with Akira Sato, Eikoh Hosoe and others of the Vivo collective, created this object in 1965, of which very few copies exist in the world today, starting from an intuition: while visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial, he imagined he was involved in photographic evocations that he would transmit in full format in the pages that follow one another in an incessant emotional sequence. In a black and white characterised by strong contrasts, portraits and letters of soldiers, Coca Cola bottles and packs of Lucky Strike abandoned by American troops, photo-texts and desolate landscapes follow one after the other, indicating that historical phase in which post-war Japan is radically changing.
