inscribed top right: LADY FREDERICK WIFE TO SIR THOMAS FREDERICK K.nt / GOVERNOR OF FORT ST DAVID, and dr of / Wth MONCREIFFE, b.n 1690 - d.1767. / AND SIR THOMAS FREDERICK K.nt B.n 1680 - d. 1730.
In the collection of provenance the painting is traditionally attributed to Michael Dahl (1659–1743) . The work depicts Mary Moncrieff, wife of Sir Thomas Frederick (1680-1730), depicted full-length seated, in an elegant blue and white dress. The woman holds up the portrait of her husband, who passed away in 1730. Sir Thomas Frederick was a member of the Frederick family of Burwood Park; son of Thomas Frederick (1650-1720) and Leonora Maresco, he was governor of the East India Company in Madras.
