Questo dipinto raffigurante il mito di Pan e Siringa (Ovidio, Metamorfosi, I, 687-712) può essere collegato ad una tela di diversa composizione di Jean-Honoré Fragonard, che tuttavia presenta lo stesso soggetto, le stesse dimensioni e la stessa incorniciatura tendente all'ovale (cfr. J.P. Cuzin e P. Rosenberg, scheda in J. H. Fragonard e H. Robert a Roma, catalogo della mostra, Roma, Villa Medici, 1990, pp. 149-150, dove il quadro è datato al 1761).
