Il dipinto offerto nel lotto si inserisce nel filone del caravaggismo napoletano di matrice fiamminga; in particolare trova stringenti affinità con le opere note di Hendrik van Somer, allievo di Ribera attivo a Napoli e a Roma tra gli anni Venti e gli anni Cinquanta del Seicento. Per la resa anatomica del santo e per le fisionomie estremamente caratterizzate degli aguzzini, il dipinto trova un interessante confronto con il Martirio di San Sebastiano di van Somer conservato a Napoli, Museo di Capodimonte.
