Arnaldo Tamayo Méndez fu il primo astronauta cubano nello spazio. Fu selezionato nel 1978 per partecipare al Programma Intercosmos con l'Unione Sovietica e il 18 settembre 1980 salpò sulla navicella spaziale Sojuz 38 con l'ingegnere sovietico Yuri V. Romanenko verso il complesso orbitale Saljut 6. Furono realizzati una serie di esperimenti scientifici organici, medico-biologico e tecnologici per una settimana.
